The Confucius Institute at Eduardo Mondlane University (referred to as "CI-UEM") was established in October 2012 and is the only and largest Chinese language education institution in Mozambique. Since its inception, with the care and support of Chinese and Mozambican cooperation units and many sectors of society, significant progress has been made in all aspects of work. At present, in addition to the headquarters, there are several teaching sites including Joaquim Chissano University, Rovuma University, Maputo Language Institute, and Chinese International School. In 2018, it was awarded the honorary title of "Global Advanced Confucius Institute".

CI-UEM is committed to offering various Chinese training courses and cultivating Chinese language professionals. There are now elementary, intermediate and advanced Chinese training courses, divided into day classes and evening classes. It aims to provide Chinese language teaching services for the students at UEM, the community citizen, and those who like Chinese language and Chinese culture. The undergraduate program of Chinese began to enroll students in 2016. The four-year program consists of one day class and one evening class each year. After graduation, students can either apply for scholarships to continue their studies in Chinese universities, or find employment in Chinese enterprises or engage in Chinese-related careers. Also, CI-UEM has established cooperative relationships with dozens of Chinese-funded institutions in Mozambique, providing internship and employment opportunities for the students.

CI-UEM has established "China Ambassador Scholarship", "Victor scholarships and bursaries", etc., aiming to commend students with excellent academic performance and encourage them to learn Chinese and complete their studies. CI-UEM also regularly organizes activities such as the international Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), higher education missions to China, and summer camps for college and middle school students. To be responsible for guiding students to participate in "Chinese Bridge" competition, the "Sino-Portuguese Translation Competition" and other competitions. To help students apply China Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship, China University Scholarship and other programs, select outstanding students to study in China and help them realize their dream of studying in China universities.

CI-UEM attaches great importance to improve its management ability and teaching quality. Promote the improvement of teaching quality through special teaching and research activities such as open classes and demonstration classes, and improve management level and work efficiency through job target responsibility assessment.

After years of development, CI-UEM has established a relatively complete internal management system, and is developing towards the direction of connotation, localization, and specialization, and will make every effort to build a teaching and research oriented Confucius Institute.
